Real-Life Math

As a police officer, you have to be able to use mathematics in many circumstances. "I tell kids to keep their grades up and learn computers and math," says Cassondra Rowntree, a police officer. "We deal with all sorts of numbers on a day-to-day basis."

For example, police officers use math to figure out who profits from the sale of a house owned by a convicted criminal. For instance, if you're a federal marshal, you might be responsible for the sale of assets seized because they were bought with illegal proceeds. Frequently, this means drug money.

You're in charge of the sale of a large home seized after its owner was convicted of trafficking crack cocaine. The home and its contents have been appraised at $363,000. The problem is, the drug trafficker never had clear title over the property. The previous owner's wife had a lien against the property for $155,000 -- which was her share of a divorce settlement.

The only bid on the property is for $240,000. It's your job to figure out the net proceeds to the government.
