Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You counsel the husband.

You ask the man to explain what happened. Through his ranting and swearing, you begin to piece together the cause of his anger. He just got laid off from his job and his car broke down. He's angry because his wife spent $30 to buy their daughter running shoes for school. Just talking about it, the man gets mad again.

The man hasn't broken any laws, but you're not comfortable leaving him in the home. He needs some time alone to sober up and cool off.

You ask if there's anywhere he can go for the night. He says his brother lives a few blocks away. You help the man call his brother, who agrees to pick him up and give him a bed for the night. The wife and children are silent but relieved when the brother shows up and leads the man away.

Police officer Cassondra Rowntree says this is the type of tough decision law enforcement officials have to make all the time. "It's knowing that what I do will affect not just me, but that person and their families," she says.

"The hardest thing to do is not to judge someone based on their beliefs or the way they live, but to enforce the law the way it is written."
