Industry Liaison Officer

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Communication

In your job as an industry liaison officer, you have been invited to make a presentation to a chamber of commerce meeting in your city. You know that many of the businesspeople who will be attending this meeting are involved in industries that might fund research being done on pesticides and herbicides.

You carefully develop a talk based on what you think they want to hear. You will be discussing the research that is under way at your university on herbicides and pesticides.

When you arrive at the meeting, the chair takes you aside and tells you that the group is not interested in hearing about pesticides and herbicides. A physicist spoke on that topic last month. They want you to speak on some other topic instead, such as the research on Internet technology that is being done at the university.

Your entire talk is about herbicides and pesticides. You gulp and say, "OK."

You are scheduled to go on in half an hour. You have half an hour to put together a talk on Internet technology. You must do it in your head based on information you already know.

In your head, make a list of Internet technologies that you use when you access the Internet at home or school. Be prepared to discuss and explain these technologies.
