Insider Info

Additional Information

The minimum entry requirement for architecture technology is a two- or three-year program in architectural technology.

A number of universities in the United States offer degree programs in architectural technology.

Generally, you should have a strong interest in art and design if you want to pursue a career in this field, says Amanda Welsh. She is a former architectural technician with the U.S. National Park Service in Alaska.

You must also be detail-oriented. "It's fairly detailed [work], and if you are not interested in that, it will be very difficult," she says.

You must also have strong math skills and computer skills. "Everything is done on the computer now," says Shawn Royster. He is an architectural technician in Wisconsin.

Strong communication skills -- both verbal and written -- are also necessary since architectural technicians have to know exactly what their clients and employers want done. They must also be able to understand the complex and complicated building codes.

Extra Requirements

The American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) offers certification for drafters. Although not mandatory, certification demonstrates competence and knowledge of nationally recognized practices. Certifications are offered for several specialties, including architectural, civil, and mechanical drafting.
