Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You're an audiometric technician assisting with an ABR test given to an infant. You answer the mom's questions about the test. This is what you say to her:

  1. Where will the electrodes be attached to the scalp?

One electrode will be attached to the forehead, one will be attached to the base of the neck, and two will be placed on the top of the infant's head.

  2. Could the sounds presented cause my baby discomfort?

The sounds presented to the baby are too soft to cause damage or discomfort.

  3. How long will the test take to complete?

The test takes between 40 minutes and an hour to complete.

  4. Can my baby be nursing during the test or does he need to be asleep?

The baby needs to be fully asleep during the entire test.
