Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You pay Michelle a portion of her paycheck until the boss comes back from vacation.

This is the real-life decision that Sharon Conboy, a payroll officer, would make.

"You can have someone crying in your office because they didn't get paid," says Conboy. "The boss is away on vacation, and this person is telling you that they don't have any money for food.

"It's a very stressful situation," she says. "Do you put out the money? Was there a reason they weren't paid? Will you be on the line for the money you paid out?"

Conboy says she looks at an employee's records, and tries to verify with other people in the company to see whether the person worked the stated hours. She also takes into consideration how long the person has worked there. "It depends on the situation," she says. "If a mistake has been made, and a good employee needs money, I will help."
