Chimney Sweep

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

You ask your apprentice, Bertha, for an invoice that records the number of chimneys she cleaned over the past few days, and how much she charged for them.

Unfortunately, she hasn't filled out the forms properly and has only jotted down a few figures about what she has done.

  1. Bertha cleaned 10 chimneys. She did a majority of thorough cleanings for $90. But she says she remembers doing a few minor cleanings for $75. She was paid $855 in total for the work. How many $90 cleanings did she do?
  2. How much tax should your apprentice have charged for the $855 worth of cleanings, if the tax rate is 7 percent?

"We use math to add up bills and to figure out invoices," says Rob Skujins, a chimney cleaner. "We also have to be able to figure out the [tax]."

Sort out the invoice for Bertha, and then sit down and teach her how to fill in the forms correctly!
