Additional Information

Most chimney sweeps learn their trade on the job. Chimney sweep Gary Stanger suggests people interested in this career contact someone in the field and volunteer to help out.

"Go with a sweep for a few days to get hands-on experience," he says.

Stanger also suggests visiting trade shows to check out new home heating technology.

In the United States, certification is voluntary but highly recommended.

"It's not required, but in my mind, and in the mind of the companies that I respect in my area, and really nationwide, it is what you want to get," says sweep Thomas Biscoe. "CSIA [Chimney Safety Institute of America] certification is basically the mark of a professional."

The CSIA is the only nationally recognized certification and accreditation program for chimney sweeps in the United States. The school runs every summer and provides six days of intensive training. Sweeps certified through the CSIA are re-tested every three years.
