Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are preparing the final statistics from a basketball game. Before you hand them in, you need to make sure they balance.

During the game, players from Team A attempted 10 shots while Team B players attempted 20 shots. Team A made five shots and Team B made 10 shots.

Rebounds = shots attempted - shots made

Rebounds = (10 + 20) - (5 + 10)
Rebounds = 30 - 15
Rebounds = 15

There were 15 rebounds in total.

You obviously have to be comfortable doing basic math if you want to become a sport statistician. But you don't have to be a math wizard. "At our level, the computer program does the work," says Leroy McKinnon. He is the league statistician for a major junior hockey league.

"Basically, you are not crunching numbers. You are adding numbers into a computer, and the computer does the work," he says. "At the big league level, you...probably have to have some math background."
