Additional Information

If you want to go into this career, get experience while you're still in school. Volunteer to keep statistics for any sport. Contact the coach or the sports information office to get started.

Sports statisticians for teams do not require the academic training of most professional statisticians in statistical theory, models and applications. But they usually have at least a bachelor's degree in some combination of mathematics, statistical analysis and computer science. These programs are available at all universities and many community colleges.

Other important characteristics are strong communication skills, computer literacy, keyboarding skills, a knowledge of sports, good observation skills and the ability to handle stress and work within deadlines.

One trend is the use of hands-on computers to record the actions directly at the game site. This has added computer operators and software technicians to the game site. So good keyboarding skills are very important.
