Real-Life Communication -- Solution

"[There's] nothing like telling the truth as it is," says Donald Bisson, who teaches reflexology. "Why tell the person that it is caused by something else when it really is due to stress? Advise the client to take responsibility by seeing a therapist, doctor or whatever works."

So you might say something like this:

"I am going to work on the pressure points in your toes, as they are directly related to your head and neck. It seems every time your boss enters the room, you tense your neck without even realizing it. This could be, in part, causing your headaches.

"However, we can't stop there. You probably need to deal with your feelings towards your boss. I can work on you now, and it may help, but the headaches will likely begin again the next time you see your boss. Maybe a therapist can help you sort through your feelings.

"I don't think I have to tell you of the harmful effects of smoking. Cigarettes put such a huge amount of toxins in your body that it's enough to give anyone headaches. There are many ways to quit smoking. Your doctor may be the best person to help you with this.

"Lastly, you would feel a lot better if you got some exercise. Even if you just went for a 15-minute walk every day, it would give you a way to relieve your stress, and offer many health benefits. Talk to your doctor before you start an exercise plan, and see what will work best for you. If you do some research, you're bound to find a variety of activities you'd like to try.

"You need to take responsibility for your health and realize there are many factors that contribute to your health, in mind, body and spirit. Coming here is a step in the right direction. Good luck!"
