Real-Life Math

After years of working as a river rafting guide, you're starting your own company. White Knuckle Rafting will offer the best rafting thrills money can buy.

To figure out how much you'll make per trip, you use the following numbers:

  • The going rate for a one-day rafting trip is $100 per person. Each raft holds 8 people, plus a guide.
  • Your guides will be paid $10 for each customer in their raft.
  • Meals will cost $30 per person, including the guides.
  • Fuel will cost $5 per person, including the guides.
  • Insurance will cost $2.50 per person, including the guides.
  1. What is your profit for each full raft?
  2. On your first weekend in business, 19 people sign up. What will be your profit?
