Additional Information

Most states don't require formal exams for river guides, although many guides are registered with state agencies. Registration signifies that guides underwent an apprenticeship and passed a rigorous examination.

Guides often learn from other guides. Some rafting companies offer schools -- short, intensive courses that prepare students to take local or state guide exams or to go directly to work on a river.

Guide Bob Meister makes it sound pretty easy to get into guiding, as long as you have some basic safety certification. "Anybody can become a guide. All they need is a first aid card and a CPR card," he says. Check with your local guides register or parks division to verify the requirements specific to your state.
