River Rafting Guide

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math -- Solution

1. What is your profit for each full raft?

Profit = (100 x 8) - (10 x 8) - (30 x 9) - (5 x 9) - (2.50 x 9)
Profit = 800 - 80 - 270 - 45 - 22.50
Profit = $382.50

You make $382.50 in profit for each full raft. With this, you'll have to cover ongoing expenses such as advertising and maintenance of equipment.

2. On your first weekend in business, 19 people sign up. What will be your profit?

Profit = (19 x 100) - (10 x 19) - (30 x 22) - (5 x 22) - (2.50 x 22)
Profit = 1,900 - 190 - 660 - 110 - 55
Profit = $885

You'll have $885 left after expenses.

Most river rafting guides don't use math in their job. The exception is when they are also the owner of the tour company. Then they need to do accounting and budgeting.

Usually, it's not the guides who use math to plan trips and budget supplies. "I would think with all companies that's taken care of by management," says river rafting guide Gord Huggard.
