Additional Information

There are no specific educational requirements for lexicographers. There are no college degree programs in lexicography in the U.S.

Most companies hire people with at least a bachelor's degree, often with a major in linguistics or English.

However, this certainly isn't always the case. Beth Boda has a degree in education, Michael Agnes has a degree in Russian and Sidney Landau has a degree in creative writing. Some lexicographers have advanced degrees.

"A lexicographer must have a good sense of the language," says Landau. "The basic skills are those of a good writer. Lexicographers must think clearly. They must be interested in the world. They must read the newspaper and know what's going on. They need a good fund of general information."
