Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Knowledge is an important tool for relaxing a patient. You could sit down with the patient before the procedure and explain it to him. Here's what you could tell him:

I can see you're nervous, sir. Let me explain this machine a little bit. MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. It doesn't use any radiation at all. Powerful magnets and radio waves do all the work. They are going to create a clear image of what's going on inside your chest. That's going to help your doctor to treat your heart.
There is nothing painful about this exam. The worst thing about it is the cold, hard table you have to lie on. If you're uncomfortable, I can try to make it easier by bringing you a pillow and a blanket. I'll also warn you that the machine is going to be kind of loud when I turn it on. Some patients tell me it makes thumping or humming sounds. If you're worried it will bother you, I can get you a set of earplugs.
I can see you aren't happy about taking this exam. So let's get it right the first time. For me to get the best image, I need you to stay as still as possible during the entire procedure. If you move or fidget the images may blur. This will cause errors. If you don't think you can keep still, I can give you a mild sedative to relax you. But you did say that you don't want to be drugged. Drugs are not necessary for this procedure if you can stay still.
During the procedure you can talk to me. There's an intercom in the scanner. If you have any questions or feel any discomfort, please let me know. I'll be with you the entire time. And I saved the best for last: as soon as the procedure is finished you can go. There's no recovery time required. You can go back to your normal diet and activities right away.
Do you have any questions, or should we get this test over with?
