Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell him what he's asking is impossible.

You explain to him that legally your hands are tied. You are sorry, but what the board wants is impossible. Although you carefully go over the details, the client is still visibly upset when he leaves.

A month later, the head of the firm calls you into his office. He's just learned that the client has hired another law firm. He asks if you have any idea why this has happened. When you explain, instead of sympathizing, he criticizes you for not handling the situation more adeptly.

"Communication skills are everything in this business," he reminds you. Clearly, the incident has not helped your career with this firm.
