Real-Life Communication

Air traffic controllers have their own language while they're on the job. They use special vocabulary that includes words and numbers.

These words and numbers are a kind of verbal short-hand. They allow an air traffic controller to convey lots of information quickly and precisely. Much of this information is communicated using codes.

"Speaking and listening are the most important communication skills in air traffic control," says air traffic controller Linda Behme. "Pilots and air traffic controllers speak over frequencies and must use the proper standard phraseology that is used internationally when transmitting to avoid any confusion."

The phraseology she's talking about are things like these wind and weather codes:

Wind Direction
Code
Wind Force mph

NNE021 - 3 light1clear00
NE044 - 7 light2cloudy02

Here are three codes. Figure out what each of them means. For example, a code of 08317 means a light wind from the east and foggy conditions.

  2. 02862
  3. 14400
