Real-Life Math -- Solution

How many minutes will it be before you can give the pilot permission to approach the airport? This is how to figure it out:

First, find out how fast the plane is flying per minute. Then figure out how many minutes it will take it to fly 78 miles.

468 / 60 minutes = 7.8 miles per minute
78 miles / 7.8 miles per minute = 10

Therefore, at a speed of 7.8 miles per minute, it will take this plane 10 minutes to reach the marker.

In 10 minutes, you can give this pilot permission to approach the airport.

Air traffic controllers have to be comfortable using numbers.

"Basic math skills are good to know for air traffic control," says controller Linda Behme. "Knowing the distance, speed, time equation and being able to do mental math quickly helps. Thinking in three dimensions is what is important in the field and certain types of math may help in this regard."
