Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You have been asked to write promotional copy about Iceland that will grab a reader's attention.

"There is a lot of information out there, so you really have to be creative to come up with something that will grab someone's attention," says copywriter Bernadine Ward.

"If you write copy for eight hours a day for 10 years, it becomes pretty easy. But you always have to make sure you have a fresh approach to the material."

Here is an example of ad copy that has been jazzed up to entice a reader to learn more about Iceland:

"Viking Values!

"Take off for Iceland with a two-for-one Viking value. Buy one ticket for $500 and get the next one free! The ticket will take you all the way to London, England, and back, but we invite you to stop over in Iceland for as long as you like -- no extra charge! Take this once-in-a-lifetime chance to visit an exotic country.

"When the Vikings sailed to Iceland in the ninth century they were greeted by fire and ice. Now you have the chance to visit this unique and exciting island. See the amazing geysers and steam vents, and take a dip in a hot spring while surrounded by glaciers.

"Iceland isn't all ice. While you'll get a chance to see a land covered by glaciers, Iceland has a moderate climate created by the North Atlantic drift. This makes the rolling grassland countryside perfect for raising sheep. The mild climate is also perfect for anglers to try their luck casting for the world-famous salmon.

"Book your trip today!"
