Insider Info

Additional Information

If you want to be a copywriter, experiment with different forms of writing and read as many different kinds of writing as you can.

Keep a portfolio of your writing. Writers are judged on the work they have done in the past. You can start a portfolio right away, since it doesn't have to all be published material.

No specific education is required to be a copywriter. Some students can get work in this field right out of high school. However, a university degree in journalism, English literature, mass communications or a similar field is highly recommended.

An advanced degree won't hurt either. "I've had a 50 percent increase in salary since I got mine. And if you don't want to top out at copy chief, you'll eventually need to get an MBA," says copywriter Jim Shamlin.

Extra Requirements

Some associations offer certifications for writers and authors. Certification can demonstrate competence and professionalism, making candidates more attractive to employers. For example, the American Grant Writers’ Association (AGWA) offers the Certified Grant Writer® credential. Certification can also increase opportunities for advancement.
