Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You believe the beetle in Mrs. Jones's kitchen was a saw-toothed grain beetle. The cupboard was dark, dry and was used to store pet food, everything a saw-toothed grain beetle likes -- and almost everything a foreign grain beetle doesn't like.

Sometimes it pays to do some detective work, says Reichardt. "Insects just don't appear. They're there for a reason."

He says people often believe insects turn up because their homes haven't been cleaned properly, which is generally not the case. "If you find an insect, don't sweat it," says Reichardt.

Just call your local entomologist and ask for help. They will be more than willing to help you determine what it is and what you can do to get rid of it.
