Additional Information
How does one become a sculptor? There's no recipe. Artists find their niches
in a variety of ways.
While a formal education isn't mandatory, many sculptors complete a fine
arts degree and train under master artists. Though the talent is often intuitive,
honing your skills takes practice and training.
College sculpture education programs generally encourage students to work
with a variety of media. They explore and research a wide range of approaches
and concepts.
Sculptor Michael Kaczor advises young sculptors to visit sculpting shows
put on by sculptors, toolmakers and stone suppliers. This will give you a
sense of the industry and can provide valuable networking connections with
others in the field.
"My suggestion to a student is 'Go for it!' If you are happy with what
you have produced, do another one," says sculptor Chris Rose.
"Some sculptures will be great -- some may not be great at present. Wait
-- your mind may change and they will be great later! Some pieces you may
think are terrible, but a stranger may think they are absolutely wonderful.
Everything is relative."
