High school preferred, plus moderate length, on-the-job training

Subway and streetcar operators typically have a high school diploma or equivalent and receive on-the-job training.

There are no educational requirements for this career.

But you should have a high school diploma, and have taken courses in the following subjects: math, business, mechanics, driver's education, physical education and shop.

On-the-job training may last up to six months. You also have to pass several exams that test your comprehension skills, as well as your understanding of signals and emergency procedures.

You may also have to pass a drug test.

Some systems require subway operators to work as bus drivers for a certain period of time. Senior subway operators may become dispatchers or supervisors.
