"Many, but not all, professional mycologists have a background in biology," says Linda Kohn. She is president of the Mycological Society of America. "Academic researchers like myself typically have doctorates in biology or microbiology."

Tom Volk is a mycologist at the University of Wisconsin. He says undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing mycology as a specialty should get a degree in botany or microbiology, then specialize in graduate school.

"Most universities or colleges offer only one course in mycology at the undergraduate level, although I teach three here. When selecting a graduate school, there are many good ones. It would depend on the particular area of mycology that interests you," he says.
