Additional Information

To become a pathology assistant, students typically first earn a bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, natural or health science or in a biomedical field.

In the United States, formal academic programs for pathology assistants have been around since the 1970s. Most programs take two years to complete and result in a master's degree.

In addition, many U.S. employers require certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, even for PAs with the master's degree.
