Insider Info

Additional Information

Genetic technologists generally have a bachelor's degree in a science or medical technology. They then receive an additional one to two years of training in a genetic technology program.

"Ours is a post-degree program," says Fred Bauder. He works with a technical institute. "We find that a bachelor's degree is necessary because students need to have a background in the area."

Most genetic technologists are required to become certified or register with a professional organization.

Extra Requirements

Clinical laboratory technologists can obtain a general certification as a medical laboratory technologist or a certification in a specialty, such as cytotechnology or medical biology. Most credentialing institutions require that technologists complete an accredited education program in order to qualify to sit for an exam. For more credentialing information, visit the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, American Medical Technologists, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
