Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution
You ask Kevin if he can wait to call his mother.
This is the real-life decision made by Carolyn Daly. She is a camp director.
"You try to keep the homesick kids away from calling their parents right away,"
she says. "Often, the parents will feed right into it."
After Kevin asks you to take him to a phone, you say, "Can you at least
wait until you've finished dessert?" Kevin, whose face is covered in
chocolate from the large piece of cake he's attacking, nods dejectedly.
You reach across the table and grab some paper and colored markers. "You've
told me all the things you hate about camp," you say. "How about telling me
some things you like about camp?"
After having a little trouble getting started, you and Kevin have come
up with a list including swimming, campfires and horses. He says that some
of the children make fun of him. "They pick on me because I'm small,"
he says.
Days later, Kevin seems to be doing better. He won second place in a swimming
competition and he has made some friends. On the last day of camp, he introduces
you to his parents. "This is my friend, the camp director," he says.
