Real-Life Math -- Solution

As soon as you finish these calculations, you can head back to the courts:

Part A

You want to know the facility rental rate. You are charged 25 percent of $3,000 per day.

$3,000 x 0.25 = $750 per day

Because the camp runs for 5 days, you multiply $750 by 5.

$750 x 5 = $3,750

It will cost $3,750 to rent the gyms for 5 days.

Part B

The next step is calculating staff wages. You hired 1 instructor for every 8 children. There are 240 campers. How many instructors are there?

240 / 8 = 30 instructors

The instructors each get paid $400, so you multiply 30 by 400.

30 x $400 = $12,000

The total wages work out to $12,000.

Part C

Add up all the miscellaneous items including clothing ($2,300), awards ceremony ($400) and advertising and promotion ($4,000):

$2,300 + $400 + $4,000 = $6,700

The sum of parts A, B, and C will tell you the cost of the entire camp.

$3,750 + $12,000 + $6,700 = $22,450

"The math I do is fairly basic," says Trix Baker. Baker is a director at a basketball camp. "But I do need to be comfortable with numbers."
