A master's or doctorate degree is required for work in this area. Undergraduate courses in mathematics, statistics, computer applications and psychology are preferred.

According to Dayton University, psychometrists with a master's degree are usually hired by private research firms and companies. Those with PhDs work for universities and government agencies, in addition to private research firms and testing companies.
