Real-Life Math

Math is crucial to an arson investigator's job. "We have to understand firefighting operations. That includes hydrant flows and friction loss [like how much water was put on the fire]," says arson investigator Amy Krise.

They must also calculate payoffs on mortgages and vehicles that are damaged by arsonists. They calculate the debt of the suspect.

They also keep up with fire statistics!

Fire investigator John Putinsky advises students to study statistics.

"If you know your statistics, you have an advantage in solving the crime," says Putinsky.

According to the FBI, approximately one-half of those arrested for arson are juveniles. There are 88,887 acts of arson committed in a year. Approximately one-fifth of those result in arrests. About how many of those arrested will be juveniles? The average amount of property damaged for each incident is $10,300. How much damage did the juveniles alone cause?
