Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could say:

Thank you for allowing me to speak to you today. I am here because of my concern about Eagle Lake. The lake is facing a potential crisis that could wipe out both its fish population and the existence of any plant-eating animals along the shore, such as deer and moose.

The problem in Eagle Lake is twofold. First, a fast-spreading weed called hydrilla has been detected in several areas. Hydrilla has been known to take over entire lakes in just a few years. If this happens, the lake will become so weed-clogged that swimming, fishing and boating will be impossible.

The hydrilla problem can be solved by removing the small number of plants now there.

The second problem involves gas bubble disease. Gas bubble disease occurs when gases are found in high concentrations beneath the water's surface. Fish and other animals may die if concentrations run too high.

In Eagle Lake, gas bubbles are being caused by an explosion of blue-green algae. This algae is known as geosmin. We have detected a glut of chlorophyll A -- the main pigment in this type of algae.

We believe the cause of the explosion is a high level of nitrogen in the mud and sand on the lake bottom. It may also be because of carbon monoxide produced by boats.

In short, the problems threaten the natural beauty of Eagle Lake. I urge you to do what you can to help prevent the loss of a great resource. Thank you.
