Real-Life Math -- Solution

You've got to convert pounds into kilograms. There are 2 ways to do it, based on the hints supplied.

Method 1:

2.2 pounds = 1 kilogram
1 kg = 2.2 lbs

x = 180 pounds
x = 180 / 2.2 pounds
x = 81.8 kg

Method 2:

1 pound = 0.45 kilogram

180 pounds x 0.45 = 81 kg

This student weighs 81 kg.

A good understanding of metric is helpful on the job, says Linda Crockett of the Professional Ski Instructors of America. Many skis and boots are made in Europe, where the metric system -- not the imperial system -- is used. Other than that, math isn't used on the job very much.

"It's not a real numbers-oriented profession," says Crockett. However, familiarity with basic mathematics will be helpful.

"There are things like class sizes, or things having to do with pay, because a lot of times there will be base pay or percentages [involved]," she says. Those instructors who go on to jobs in management or supervision will need to understand financial and accounting concepts.
