Insider Info

Additional Information

Many aircraft painters start as automotive painters and acquire the specific skills for aircraft painting on the job. Others start as helpers with aircraft painting companies, learning the trade as apprentices.

Aircraft painter Tim Braithwaite believes in on-the-job training. He hires people who want to work but have zero experience. "We bring them in as strippers [or] cleaners," says Braithwaite.

Some community colleges and technical schools offer specific classes in aircraft painting. Skills needed include paint mixing, application and disposal of potentially hazardous materials.

Inspection roles are one reason many aircraft painting companies require workers to attend continuing education classes on aircraft maintenance or mechanics.
