Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here are some possible answers for your post-riot news conference:

  1. Are any guards hurt?

Two guards were treated with minor injuries early on in the incident, but they've since been released from hospital and sent home. We have reason to believe some prisoners may be injured, but none have come forward for medical help.

  2. How many prisoners are involved in the riot?

I want to emphasize that only a small percentage of the prison's population has chosen to take part in this disturbance. We estimate that 60 of the prison's 1,500 inmates are involved.

  3. What caused the riot?

We've not been able to conduct a full investigation of the events leading to the disturbance, but indications are that an escape attempt may have been made. The disturbance began at the end of a weekly film in the prison's main activities room.

  4. What are their demands?

The prisoners have several demands relating to living conditions at the prison. They also want to effect the release of some prisoners.

  5. Will you give in to their demands?

I don't have the power to deal with any demands outside of the prison walls.

  6. Who are the hostages?

The two guards taken hostage are William Morris, 35, a 10-year veteran; and Jill August, 29, an employee for four years. They're unharmed and in good health.

  7. What message do you have for the prisoners and their families?

I'm not here to send messages, but I do hope that this is brought to a safe and swift conclusion for all parties involved.
