Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution
You refuse to repair the bike.
This is the real-life decision Ben Kobylianski would have made in this
situation. "Dealing with people is probably the most difficult part of the
job," he says.
"People desperately want you to fix things up for them. They will bring
in the most ancient bikes and want them fixed. To them, a bike is a bike."
But to Kobylianski, a bike isn't just a bike. "Some bikes aren't
safe to ride," he says. All his repair decisions come down to safety, and
he won't repair a bike if he doesn't think he can make it safe for
the rider.
"Ultimately, if I do the work, and someone goes out and gets injured on
that bike, I could be held responsible."
Kobylianski always tries to repair bicycles that come in. But
he knows the limits. If a bike just isn't safe, it can't go back
on the road.
