Real-Life Math -- Solution

A man comes into your shop because he needs new spokes for 2 bicycle wheels. Using the circumference of the wheels, you discover the length of the spokes:

Find out what the radius of the large wheel is:

A.) Wheel is 76.65 inches in circumference.

Circumference = 2 x Pi x R

Pi = 3.14
76.65 = 3.14 x 2 x R
76.65 = 6.28 x R
R = 76.65 / 6.28
R = 12.21

Then find out the radius of the smaller wheel.

B.) Circumference = Pi x 2 x R

63 = 3.14 x 2 x R
63 = 6.28 x R
6.28 x R = 63
R = 63 / 6.28
R = 10.03

The spokes for the large wheel should be 12.21 inches long and the spokes for the smaller wheel should be 10.03 inches.

"People may be surprised to find out that bike mechanics use a lot of the math we learned in high school geometry and algebra," says Kobylianski. "We have to take a lot of measurements."
