Real-Life Math

Before you head out on the road to look for your first storm-chasing adventure, you should know that you'll need to make all sorts of mathematical calculations.

"Math is used heavily in storm chasing -- on simple levels and difficult levels right on up to differential calculus," says storm chaser Don Lloyd.

If you were on a chase with Don Lloyd as your partner and had to determine how far off a storm was based on hearing and sight alone, how would you do that?

Here are the variables:

You see a flash of lightning and count to 25 before you hear the thunder (Lightning Distance, or LD)

Sound (Sd) travels 1 mile every 5 seconds

(LD) / (Sd) = distance from your location
