Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You don't do the test.

You realize that you cannot do the test on your sister. You explain the reasons again. She is very upset and you feel badly about it.

You invite Debbie to spend the night at your apartment so she won't have to pay for a hotel. The next morning, your supervisor congratulates you for making a good decision. "We must always be above suspicion," he says.

Your supervisor asks you to phone your sister and ask her if she can come in the next evening. He says he can reschedule someone else's appointment and fit your sister in, since she traveled such a long distance. Your sister phones home and arranges with her employer and her babysitter. Another polysomnography technician does the test the next night.

"We're not supposed to diagnose a family member. Who's to say they are not trying to scam and I'm fudging the results?" says Ron Polischuk, a registered polysomnography technologist. "We are also not allowed to accept gifts from patients."
