Entry-level positions require high school graduation. Some technicians learn through on-the-job training.

Some employers might require post-secondary training in a polysomnography program, ranging in length from one to two years. These certificate programs typically include a semester of clinical work.

Many polysomnography technicians enter the field from a related health profession.

"Different employers have different requirements for an entry-level position," says Audrey Olsen, a technologist.

"I think that most people going into the field have a full or a partial university degree," says technologist Ron Polischuk. "I don't think I could have done this work right out of high school."

The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists provides voluntary certification. Some states have licensing requirements.
