Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You turn down Jeff's request to attend his high school reunion.

You tell Jeff that even though you can see the positive aspects of him going to the reunion, you just can't let it happen because it's a licensed event and alcohol will be flowing freely. Because he needs to stay away from alcohol as part of his parole terms, you figure it's just not worth it.

He's very upset and says that he feels you don't trust him. But he comes back to you the week after and says now that he's had time to cool down, he understands your decision and realizes you're just trying to support and help him.

The job is not always easy and it sometimes requires making tough decisions like this. That's what being a parole officer is all about.

Good decision-making skills are "critical" for parole officers, says Keith Hardison. He's the chief administrative officer at the Association of Paroling Authorities International. "Parole officers must make life-changing decisions almost on a daily basis."
