Additional Information

Traffic engineers usually have at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

After graduating, civil engineers are required to register as a professional engineer with a state association of professional engineers.

The Institute of Transportation Engineers offers a certification program with the designation of Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE). Registered engineers in the U.S., Canada or any other country that provides governmental licensing are eligible to apply for the program.

Traffic engineers must have very good computer skills, since much of the work involves computer simulations. "I received training in computer work during my third and fourth year at university," says engineer Kari Fellows.
