Additional Information

The two most common educational backgrounds for trial consultants are psychology and communications. Trial consultant J. Thomas Dalby also points to sociology, linguistics, political science and law as useful disciplines.

Most successful trial consultants have at least a master's degree or PhD. Usually, people also have a number of years of experience in their chosen field before they become trial consultants. However, some firms now hire junior consultants earlier in their careers.

Until very recently, there was no place you could go specifically to learn how to become a trial consultant. There are now two small programs in the U.S. One is at the University of Kansas and one is in the department of mass communications and communication studies at Towson University in Maryland.
